IT has been a decade since the passing of the nation’s pride, the late Datuk Seri Utama Karpal Singh and his legacy continues to inspire Malaysians.
To honour his memory, the ‘Reminiscing Karpal’ event was held at the TOP Komtar today and saw the attendance of many dignitaries, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
In his speech, Chow shared that Karpal, throughout his career, stood as a beacon of hope for the marginalised, a voice for the voiceless.
“He was a staunch defender of human rights, and civil liberties, and a vocal opponent of corruption and the mandatory death penalty.
“His fearless advocacy in and out of the courtroom earned him the respect and admiration of many, both locally and internationally.
“In Parliament, Karpal represented Jelutong and later Bukit Gelugor with vigour, ensuring that the interests of the people were always at the forefront.
“His powerful speeches and unwavering stance on justice often made headlines, reminding the government of their responsibilities and the repercussions of their actions,” he added.
Apart from his political and legal achievements, Chow highlighted that Karpal was equally renowned for his compassion and humility.
“He connected deeply with people from all walks of life, offering support and a listening ear whenever needed.
“His genuine concern for the welfare of others made him a beloved figure, not just a leader.
As we reflect on a decade without Karpal Singh, his legacy remains a guiding light.
“Karpal’s principles of justice, equality, and human dignity continue to echo, reminding us of the core values he cherished.
“Malaysians are encouraged to carry forward his legacy, striving for a nation where justice prevails and the rights of all are protected,” Chow said.
Meanwhile, Anwar, while recounting his memories of Karpal, described him as an extraordinary character, a tough and critical person who fought tirelessly for justice.
“Roger Garaudy (French philosopher and resistance fighter) once said that to honour a great person is not to bury the ashes of the dead but to rekindle the flame.
“What is important is to rekindle the flame that Karpal has ignited, as he set a high standard for us all to follow.
“It is rare to find a person who works impeccably.
“Only during tribulation do we know who are our true friends,” Anwar added.
