THE rapid development of new hotels in George Town has significantly boosted Penang’s tourism industry, enhancing its global appeal and attracting more international visitors to the food haven state.
With an increasing variety of accommodations, George Town is solidifying its position as a must-visit destination.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the UNESCO World Heritage Site has long been a draw for international travellers.

“The number of modern boutique hotels, heritage inns, and luxury accommodations has not only extended visitor stays but also boosted tourism spending, contributing to local economic growth.
“To cater to the rising demand, international hotel chains such as Marriott and Ascott have expanded their presence in Penang, targeting the high-end market.
“Penang is positioning itself as a major hub for conventions and international conferences, and having these hotels is crucial to meeting the travellers’ demand,” Wong said.
He highlighted that Malaysia’s role as the ASEAN chair this year is expected to attract various international events to Penang, further increasing hotel occupancy rates.
Despite the surge in hotel developments, authorities remain committed to preserving George Town’s architectural heritage.
Wong said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has enforced strict regulations to ensure that new developments within the heritage enclave comply with the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site Special Area Plan.
“The George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) also plays a pivotal role in reviewing hotel projects to maintain the city’s historical integrity.
“Strict conservation laws and community involvement help safeguard George Town’s cultural identity,” he said.
Wong noted that Penang’s tourism sector is experiencing significant growth, with a steady increase in international arrivals.

“The Penang International Airport recorded a 7.07% rise in total passenger movement last year, reaching 7.47 million passengers, up from 6.98 million in 2023.
“The new hotels enhance visitor experiences, making Penang an even more attractive destination for international travellers,” he added.

Wong also underscored the significant rise of boutique hotels within George Town’s heritage area, offering travellers a unique cultural experience.
“These hotels allow visitors to truly immerse themselves in Penang’s rich history,” he said, adding that the state’s tourism industry is poised for further growth in the coming years.
