EXCO for Town & Country Planning and Housing Jagdeep Singh Deo joined Seri Delima assemblymember, RSN Rayer and hundreds of devotees at the Purattasi Festival organised by Seri Ramar Temple in Solok York, near George Town on Oct 10.
Joining the crowd was Seri Ramar Temple chairman Kalyan Kumar.
In his speech, Jagdeep repeated his call for non-Islamic places of worship to apply for the funds under this category (RIBI), which for the time being is placed under the management of the two local councils, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP).
“Non-Muslim places of worship in the state are entitled to the RIBI to improve their infrastructure, with the maximum allocation being RM20,000,” Jagdeep said, adding that the fund has about RM5 million.
“I urge the various places of worship, like Seri Ramar Temple, to make their applications as soon as possible so they can utilise this facility given by the state government,” he added, saying that currently, there were only four applications for the fund.
Purattasi, one of the auspicious Hindu months, usually begins in the English month of September.
It is the sixth month in the Tamil calendar and is dedicated to God Perumal (Lord Venkateswara).
Devotees gather in large numbers at Lord Vishnu temples and special prayers are offered.
