A TOTAL of 15 representatives from the Indian Association Penang (IAP) made a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at his office today and shared some details concerning the association which was established in 1924.
IAP president A.L. Nathan briefed Chow on the activities conducted by the association thus far and also on its upcoming programme such as the Literary Competition for Tamil school students which will be held this coming Sunday.
Nathan also highlighted one of the major building projects currently undertaken by the IAP at Jalan Bagan Jermal in Pulau Tikus.
“Our project is divided into two phases. Phase one is the four-storey building which is almost 78 percent completed and the second phase is the construction of a multipurpose hall which is 25 percent completed,” shared Nathan.
Further elaborating on the matter, Datuk P. Kuvenaraju who’s the IAP vice-president stated that phase 2 which concerns the construction of the multipurpose hall is a significant project for IAP as till date there are no multipurpose halls in Penang which belongs to the Indian community.
“We have embarked on a very ambitious project which is deemed important for the Indian community as we do not have an Indian-owned multipurpose hall in Penang.
“The multipurpose hall is not meant for IAP members only but for the community but we are unable to continue with the project due to lack of funds.
”We are now seeking financial assistance from the state government to enable us to revive the project,” said Kuvenaraju.
Responding to the matter brought up by the delegates, Chow stated that he will look into it upon receiving an official letter from the association pertaining to the request for financial assistance.
