Immerse in water fun at Penang Water Sports Centre

TUCKED away in the serene enclave of Tanjung Bungah, Penang boasts of its own water sports haven, the Penang Water Sports Centre. While its unassuming location might escape notice for many, this one-stop water sports hub is on a mission to invigorate aquatic pursuits in the state.

Established in 1988 and operating under the care of Penang State Sports Council (PSSC), the Penang Water Sports Centre offers a range of activities and amenities, such as camping sites, hostels, a beach volleyball court, a gymnasium, a barbeque pit, beach futsal, fishing and many others.

Empty land, which is primarily used for camping.

The centre primarily serves as a platform for water sports associations to organise events and facilitate team-building activities.

According to PSSC director Harry Chai Heng Hua, the centre also plays a pivotal role in training water athletes, focusing on disciplines such as sailing, kayaking, dragon boat racing and parasailing.

“These are the core activities currently hosted at the centre.

“With the facilities we have, we also open it to the public to come and experience and enjoy their time here, be it for family gatherings or corporate team building events.

“We are currently working with a camping company to organise glamping activities as we have a field here that can be used for multiple purposes.

A perfect spot for camping.

“Once we have finalised and executed this idea, it will not be restricted to any particular organisation but it will be open for the public too,” Chai said during an interview with Buletin Mutiara at the Penang State Art Gallery at Dewan Sri Pinang in George Town on Sept 14.
