PENANG has embarked on an inspiring journey to establish itself as a prominent hub for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, with the launch of the UK-Malaysia STEM Education Programme.
This groundbreaking initiative, organised by the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, is making its debut in Penang from Jan 7 to 17.
Running concurrently in Kuala Lumpur, the programme is set to foster a deeper understanding of STEM subjects while strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.
The programme will engage 10 schools, with the first two, SK Bakap Indah and SJKC Sungai Lembu, participating today.
Covering critical disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics, it aims to inspire young minds to embrace the future of STEM.
Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration.
“This is our first time partnering with the United Kingdom in STEM education.
“The programme combines advanced and foundational STEM learning, offering students an invaluable opportunity to experience the best of both worlds,” he told reporters during the launching ceremony at Tech Dome Penang in Komtar today.
He added that 500 participants are expected to take part in the programme, which will also be open to the public on weekends.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised Penang’s readiness to lead the nation in STEM development.
“With its robust ecosystem of multinational companies and STEM centres, Penang is uniquely positioned to propel Malaysia forward in science and technology, he said in his speech.
Chow praised Tech Dome Penang for its pivotal role in popularising STEM, noting that its engaging activities have inspired more than one million visitors to explore the wonders of science and technology.
Since its establishment in 2016, Tech Dome Penang has hosted an impressive 4,433 STEM activities, impacting over 580,000 participants and attracting 1.35 million visitors.
Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo highlighted these achievements while commending Tech Dome’s commitment to nurturing a scientifically literate society.
The event also saw the participation of distinguished guests, including British High Commission First Secretary (Political) Sandeep Judge and CSA Catapult Skills Academy manager Alexandra Leadley.
This UK-Malaysia STEM partnership marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s educational landscape, showcasing the potential of international collaboration in empowering future generations with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in an ever-evolving world.
