INCLUSIVITY took centre stage at the ‘Colors of Autism: A Celebration of Uniqueness’ held at the Gurney Plaza in George Town this morning.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the event, said Penang is privileged to have a society that continually strives to build a more inclusive and supportive community.
He noted that the state is home to several centres and facilities that provide specialised care and education for individuals with autism, including therapy and counselling services, vocational training, and job placement assistance.

“Such initiatives have transformed Penang into a welcoming haven for individuals with autism and their families.
“However, beyond these services, we must acknowledge the daily challenges faced by families with autistic children. The difficulties in communication, uncertainties about the future, and the emotional and financial strains can be overwhelming. I recognise the resilience and dedication of parents, siblings, caregivers, and helpers who navigate these challenges with unwavering love and commitment,” Chow said in his speech.

The Penang2030 vision, as envisioned by Chow, aspires to build a strong, inclusive, and cohesive community. In line with this, the state government has consistently prioritised the welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Chow continued: “Under the i-Sejahtera program, we have allocated RM49.45 million for 274,151 recipients in Phase 1 of 2025. This includes 15,330 individuals under the Disabled Persons’ Assistance Programme, reflecting our commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has access to the resources and support they need.”

Chow added that the state is acutely aware of the issues surrounding the mistreatment and bullying of persons with disabilities. Such behaviour, he said, is unacceptable and contrary to the values upheld in Penang.
He stressed that the state government is dedicated to creating a safe environment for all individuals through enhanced public safety measures and welfare aid, in alignment with the Penang2030 vision.
“Each of us has a role to play in creating a world that embraces and celebrates everyone. My door remains open to discuss future initiatives that further this cause. Together, I am confident that we can achieve remarkable progress.”
He said the event, “The Colors of Autism: A Celebration of Uniqueness,” provided an opportunity for people of all backgrounds and cultures to come together and highlight the importance of family and community in shaping a better future for children with special needs.

While celebrating the unique strengths and perspectives of these children, he also paid tribute to the sacrifices made by parents, siblings, caregivers, and helpers who exemplify courage, resilience, love, and dedication.
He expressed his appreciation for their unwavering commitment that ensures that their children thrive and integrate seamlessly into a shared and inclusive world.

Event organising chairman Sherine Ann Selvarajah said April, being World Autism Awareness Month, is dedicated to fostering greater understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism.
She described the event, organised by Prospect Rainbow with strong support from Penang Hidden Gems and other partners, as a great example of how collaboration can pave the way for a truly inclusive society.
“While autism awareness is improving, there is still a lack of an inclusive environment in public settings where both individuals with autism and the general public can socialise,” said Sherine, who is also the Centre Director of Prospect Rainbow Development and Care Centre.

She thanked Chow for gracing the event as well as Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid, state executive councillor for Social Development, Welfare and non-Islamic Religious Affairs Lim Siew Khim, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo Sze Zeng, Gurney Plaza and McDonald’s for their invaluable support.
Among the notable guests at the event were Lim, Joshua Woo, Gleneagles Hospital Penang acting chief executive officer Ng Bong Seng, Penang Hidden Gems vice-president Teoh Shan Tatt, Gurney Plaza Penang marketing communications manager Renee Aw and McDonald’s Tanjung Tokong restaurant general manager Nur Anisaa Abd Rahman.

Chow, accompanied by Sherine and other guests, later toured the various booths set up at the event. These booths were designed to stimulate sensory engagement and showcase creative approaches to supporting children with special needs.
