A TOTAL of 1,914kg of drink boxes has been successfully collected this year in the special recycling programme organised by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).
MBSP councillor Tan Chee Teong said the competition to collect the most drink boxes was organised early this year in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.
“The competition was open to all Chinese vernacular schools in Seberang Perai.
“For this year, we managed to receive a total participation of 24 schools compared to 23 last year.
“The total weight collected this year also has increased to 1,914kg compared to 1,483kg last year. So, it is an increase of 431kg.
“This shows an awareness level among the school students has increased,” Tan said in his speech during the prize-giving ceremony at the MBSP headquarters building in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam today.
Tan added that the main purpose of the programme was to educate students on the right way to recycle drink boxes.
“As we know, drink boxes contain three layers, namely paper, plastic and aluminium which must be recycled properly to prevent environmental contamination.
“The boxes collected in this competition also will be sent to a factory in Shah Alam, Selangor to be processed accordingly,” he said, adding that the MBSP will continue to organise such events to promote recycling awareness among students.
