THE Indian community plays an integral role in the nation’s development and its socio economic progress, says Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying.

Addressing hundreds of attendees during the Tanjong Parliamentary Deepavali Open House at Lee Sih Chong Soo @ Lee Kongsi building on Burma Road today, the Deputy Finance Minister lauded the community for its contributions to unity and harmony.

She mentioned the economic impact of Little India, a tourist destination in her Tanjong constituency, which attracts both locals and international tourists.

“There are several businesses in Little India that contribute to the state’s economic progress.”

She noted that the state government, through the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB), consistently supports the welfare of the Hindu community.

“The state has increased its annual allocation for PHEB from RM1.5 million to RM2 million next year. This will allow PHEB to meet the community’s needs more effectively,” she said.

Lim has allocated RM100,000 through the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra) to empower the Indian community in her constituency. During the festive season, 140 hampers were distributed to B40 families.

Lim also stressed the importance of young people in the Indian community, encouraging them to contribute actively to society.

Among those present during the event were Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and several MBPP councillors.
