AS Penang prepares for the transformative Mutiara LRT Line project, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has reassured the public that while temporary disruptions are inevitable, the long-term benefits will far outweigh the inconveniences.

These include enhanced connectivity and improved infrastructure across the state.

Speaking at a press conference at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Chow underlined the state government’s commitment to managing challenges such as traffic congestion during peak periods, particularly festive seasons, school holidays, and long weekends.

“We recognise that Penang frequently experiences heavy traffic, especially during holidays when both residents and tourists fill the streets.

“The LRT project marks the start of a transformative journey for Penang,” Chow said.

Drawing lessons from the Klang Valley’s infrastructure developments, Chow acknowledged the disruptions that often accompany large-scale projects but stressed their importance for progress.

“Mega infrastructure projects inevitably bring temporary inconveniences.

“However, they are necessary stepping stones toward a brighter, more connected future.

“Our priority is to minimise these challenges and ensure smooth transitions during the construction phase,” he said.

Chow also outlined the state’s dual focus on talent development and traffic management, highlighting plans to implement an efficient traffic management system to mitigate congestion.

“An effective traffic plan will be crucial to maintaining smooth traffic flow and reducing disruptions.

“Simultaneously, we aim to educate the public about the project, fostering understanding and support for Penang’s long-term vision,” he explained.

He reiterated the significance of the LRT project as a cornerstone of Penang’s modernisation efforts, aiming to ensure sustainable growth and improved quality of life for its residents.

“The inconveniences are undeniable, but the benefits of this project will be a game-changer for Penang,” Chow said.
