THE Chingay Parade was introduced at the recently concluded George Town Heritage Celebration (GTHC), which took place at various locations in George Town on July 7.
Organised by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) to mark the 16th anniversary of George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription, the event exceeded expectations with approximately 18,000 visitors, as reported by its producer Ng Boon Nee.
“This year’s GTHC surpassed our expectations, drawing some 18,000 visitors. New highlights included the Chingay Parade and the ‘Build Your Own Tiles’ workshop.
“We introduced the Chingay Parade as part of our ongoing efforts to nominate the Chingay Festival for UNESCO listing,” Ng said when contacted by Buletin Mutiara today.
According to Ng, the ‘Build Your Own Tiles’ workshop is related to architectural features.
“Visitors thoroughly enjoyed the programme as they were able to take part in various workshops at the same time.
“For the next GTHC, we hope to have in-depth workshop activities as well as more talks and seminars on George Town Heritage sites,” she said.
Ng added that the ‘Disguise in Teochew Opera Face’ opera show also received positive feedback from the audience.
GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee emphasised GTHC’s commitment to being interactive, educational, enjoyable, and free for all attendees.
“Prior to the celebration, we invited schools throughout Penang to ensure the younger generation learns about our heritage and culture.
“They are the ones who will take over from us,” Dr Ang added.
