LIFTS in all housing projects should be monitored by CCTVs.
State Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo told reporters this when handing out mandarin oranges to market goers at the Lorong Kulit food complex in Datuk Keramat this morning.
“I will request the state Housing Department to ensure that this directive is followed as soon as all preparations are in place,” he said.
Joining him were MP for Jelutong, R.S.N. Rayer and Lorong Kulit Petty Traders Association chairman Cheah Ui Hong.
Jagdeep stressed that public safety was of utmost and urgent concern, as highlighted by the case of a woman being robbed and beaten up in a lift at the MRT station in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
“The unfortunate incident should not be taken lightly and need to be a wake-up call for all authorities concerned.
“I hope CCTVs will be installed in all housing projects with lifts soon, be it at government or public ones,” Jagdeep commented.
He said this is in line with the Penang government’s vision of making the city a greener, healthier and safer one.
On another matter, Jagdeep said there are a lot of issues concerning illegal traders at the Lorong Kulit market.
He urged these traders to apply for licences to ply their wares at the market area, which has 434 slots.
“We are doing our best to accommodate traders who are eager to run their business at the market compound.
“Please come forward and apply for a licence to run your business,” Jagdeep said.
