THE celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) is not merely an annual event; it serves as a reminder that the quest for gender equality still has a long way to go.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that to ensure women’s empowerment efforts are achieved, attention must be given to aspects such as well-being, quality of life, and the health of women themselves.

“The recent statement from the Deputy Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, caught my attention, highlighting that young girls or young women are at a higher risk of experiencing depression than young boys.

“In addition, the most concerning fact is that the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Information Centre has shared data showing that cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women in Malaysia, with approximately 1,740 new cases and 991 deaths reported annually.

“With this significant risk to both mental and physical health, I realised that it is critical for women to be exposed to preventive measures and periodic health checks to foster mental strength and overall well-being.

“The state government, through the state executive councillor for Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs, will continue to ensure that these efforts are further enhanced,” Chow said this during the state-level IWD 2025 celebration at Komtar today.

Chow urged all parties, including government offices, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academicians, and the general public, to continue supporting this agenda.

“We will ensure that women in Penang are not only given opportunities, but also a platform to speak up, make decisions, and shape the future of this state.

“I believe that with the spirit of togetherness and support from all parties, Penang will continue to drive achievement, ensuring that women move forward, are respected, and are recognised at all levels of society. Together, we can build a safe, inclusive, fair, and progressive state,” he added.

Chow also shared that the Global Gender Gap Report 2024, published by the World Economic Forum, revealed that Malaysia’s position has dropped by 12 places, now ranking 114th out of 146 countries, compared to 102nd place the previous year.

“With a score of only 0.668, Malaysia is still far from the ideal score of 1.0, which would represent full gender equality.

“According to the report, Malaysia’s position is lower than that of neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia,” he said.

Chow also added that the theme ‘Accelerate Action’ aligns with the state’s aspirations, as it has long been at the forefront of advocating for equal rights and opportunities, and remains committed to creating an environment that nurtures the growth of women in Penang.

State executive councillor for Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Lim Siew Khim said that this year’s IWD celebration marks the 13th edition of the event.

“This year’s event also received tremendous support from over 40 organisations, including state government agencies, private companies, non-governmental organisations, higher education institutions, and prominent shopping centers in Penang.

“Throughout March, various exciting activities will be organised for the people of Penang aiming to both empower women and strengthen the spirit of togetherness.

“More than just a celebration, IWD celebration is a tribute to the strength, resilience, and dedication of the remarkable women in this state. It honours their contributions and recognises their unwavering commitment to shaping a better future for all.

“Penang consistently introduces various initiatives to close the widening gender gap. The Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that every initiative is both strategic and impactful,” she added.

Lim shared that, throughout the campaign, iconic buildings in Penang, such as Komtar, the Penang Island City Council’s City Hall, and the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) monopole transmission tower project near the Penang Bridge, will be illuminated in purple.

Among other initiatives, messages will be displayed on LED screens across Penang, and the celebration will be further amplified on social media platforms.

It is learned that other activities include the ‘Fiesta Ungu,’ Sukaneka Rakyat, Women’s Beach Run, and more. One of the highlights is the International Women’s Day (IWD) sand art creation by a talented local sand artist, adding a unique and creative touch to the celebration.
