THE Japanese Garden in Island Park, Penang, has received a major facelift recently.
Seri Delima assembyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid thanked the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and the Landscape Department of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) for supporting the upgrading and beautification project.
She said DID spent RM45,000 to build a new rock retaining wall along the river that runs through the park while MBPP spent RM17,000 to replace a termite-stricken wooded bridge with a concrete one. The MBPP Landscape Department is also spending RM2,000 to plant grass at the empty spaces in the garden.
“The previous retaining wall along the river was in bad condition. Moreover, erosion had taken place and it was dangerous,” Syerleena told reporters at the Japanese Garden in Jalan Mas yesterday.
Work on the new retaining wall started on July 22 and was completed on Sept 17 this year whereas the concrete bridge was built in July this year.
“We want the residents to enjoy the park and have a safer and more appealing environment,” said Syerleena, adding that they have identified four other parks that needed to be upgraded.
So far, she said two parks in her constituency had been upgraded and she would seek DID’s assistance to help upgrade the other parks in her constituency.
