ANOTHER memorable day for the residents of Island Glades it was as the official opening ceremony of Karpal Singh Neighbourhood Park took place on Nov 21 at Lorong Delima 11, Island Glades.
The naming of this park was in honour of the late Karpal Singh who was loved and respected by many.

Exco for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Chow Kon Yeow officiated the ceremony.

Exco for Town and Country Planning and Housing, Jagdeep Singh, who is Karpal’s son, and his family were invited to witness the event.

“We from the Karpal Singh family are truly honoured by this and we sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this great honour. There have been many meaningful events to honour my father and this is also one of them. Once again, I truly thank all of you for this great honour,” said Jagdeep during his speech.
Also present was Gurmit Kaur, wife of the late Karpal, Seri Delima assemblymember R.S.N. Rayer, and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary, Ang Aing Thye.

It is the first neighbourhood park under MBPP to use the name of a former politician.

Karpal served as a Bukit Gelugor MP for 10 years since 2004 and has contributed a lot to the people and Penang state government.

Karpal was killed in a road accident along the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung on April 17, 2014.

“In line with the state government’s vision towards a Safer, Cleaner, Greener and Healthier Penang, MBPP has done many upgrading and landscaping projects for the neighbourhood parks. Some of it would be upgrading the facilities, installing solar lamps, installing exercise equipment, planting trees, building a jogging track and much more,” said Chow.
Other than the official opening ceremony of the neighbourhood park, there was also a donation of school uniforms for school children.
