THE Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) has introduced a significant initiative allowing all employees contributing under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) to receive medical treatment at any of the 1,400 Perkeso panel clinics across the country – completely free of charge.
Announcing the initiative at the Kesuma Chinese New Year Open House at Chang Hua Kor Moral Uplifting Society Banquet Hall in Bukit Mertajam this evening, Human Resources Minister and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong emphasised that this move would significantly ease the financial burden on workers, particularly those in the low and middle-income groups.
He said under this new policy, Perkeso contributors could walk into any panel clinic, present their identity card (IC), and receive treatment without having to pay upfront.
“The free medical coverage extends to employment injuries occurring at the workplace, accidents while commuting to work, and occupational diseases.
“Previously, employees seeking treatment at Perkeso panel clinics had to pay an initial amount of RM150 to RM200 before claiming reimbursement.
“But starting this year, they no longer need to make any upfront payment. They just need to show their IC, and if they are registered Perkeso contributors, Perkeso will fully cover their medical expenses.
“This initiative is a major step forward in ensuring accessible healthcare for employees, especially those from the lower and middle-income groups,” Sim said.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was also present, lauded Kesuma for its commitment to protecting workers’ welfare.
He reaffirmed the Penang government’s strong support for such initiatives, which align with the state’s progressive approach to social welfare.
“Penang, as a progressive state, fully supports the efforts of the Human Resources Ministry through Perkeso in ensuring the well-being of workers nationwide.
“On behalf of the Penang government, I extend my sincere appreciation to Kesuma for this initiative, as well as its other programmes aimed at assisting Perkeso contributors both in the state and across the country.
“These efforts, particularly through social protection programmes and financial assistance, have provided much-needed support to our community.
“The Penang government looks forward to strengthening its collaboration with Kesuma and Perkeso in the future, ensuring continued improvements in the welfare and security of workers in the state,” Chow said.
