CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow held a productive hour-long discussion today with representatives from the Penang Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) at his office in Komtar.
PRM, led by chairman Teh Yee Cheu and veteran consumer activist Ravinder Singh, the meeting covered various crucial topics including the 2035 Local Plan (island) Draft, the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, parks development, and the water crisis.
Also present was PRM treasurer Lee Chui Wah.
Regarding the revised 2035 Local Plan (island) Draft, Chow expressed optimism despite past challenges, affirming his hopes for a successful outcome from the ongoing efforts.
In discussing the much-debated topic of the proposed Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, Chow was questioned about its viability given the existence of the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART), another modernised transport system.
Responding, Chow emphasised the exhaustive process undertaken so far, including stakeholder and public engagement, asserting that few public projects in the country could match its thoroughness.
He highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to execute the Penang LRT project initiative through MRT Corp (Mass Rapid Transit Corporation).
“As widely known, the Federal Government has committed to executing the initiative via MRT Corp.
“The primary focus remains on constructing the LRT line, although the ART can be viewed as an integral component of a broader transportation system,” Chow said.
He indicated that MRT Corp would soon issue tenders to appoint a system provider, promising further details as the process unfolds.
Separately, Chow reiterated his commitment to fulfil the promise made to the residents of Tanjong Bungah in 2018 regarding the construction of a seaside pocket park before the conclusion of his term as chief minister.
