KEY industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders convened in Penang for Unlocking Smart Manufacturing Potential, an event dedicated to advancing collaboration, innovation, and competitiveness in Malaysia’s manufacturing sector.
Organised by the Penang government and Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Bhd (MTSFB), the event unveiled the Communication, Security, and Governance Framework for Smart Manufacturing – a comprehensive blueprint to drive Industry 4.0 adoption across Malaysia’s manufacturing landscape.
MTSFB chief executive officer Normarinee Mohd Nor introduced the framework as a symbol of collaboration and dedication.
“Aligned with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, we come together to realise a future anchored in innovation and the resilience of Malaysia’s manufacturing ecosystem.
“This framework represents the culmination of extensive industry feedback, ensuring manufacturers across all sectors and levels of digital maturity can leverage these guidelines to compete effectively on the global stage,” she said.
The framework emphasises four critical pillars, namely:
Communication: Enabling seamless data exchange for enhanced productivity and connectivity.
Security: Providing robust safeguards to counter cyber threats in interconnected ecosystems.
Governance: Establishing ethical practices and compliance with global standards.
Sustainability: Supporting resource optimisation, energy efficiency, and waste reduction.
The framework, designed for inclusivity, will be ready for adoption by Q1 2025.
Normarinee highlighted real-world examples, including Promooi’s transformation led by technology, and the collaborative efforts of the Penang Automation Cluster, as evidence of smart manufacturing’s profound impact.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari underscored Penang’s role as a leader in driving Malaysia’s transformation.
“Smart manufacturing is not just a technological upgrade; it is a strategic imperative for Malaysia’s economy and the national agenda.
“Penang must lead by example, leveraging collaboration and innovative ecosystems to empower manufacturers to compete globally,” he said at Eastin Hotel Penang today.
He stressed the framework’s alignment with Penang2030, Malaysia MADANI, and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), highlighting its holistic approach to efficiency, security, and sustainability across all manufacturing levels.
“By embracing cutting-edge technologies and fostering interconnected ecosystems, we solidify our position as a leader in manufacturing while contributing significantly to Malaysia’s aspirations under NIMP 2030,” he added.
The forum not only introduced the framework but also set the stage for insightful discussions and collaborations, showcasing Penang and Malaysia’s commitment to advancing Industry 4.0 and redefining the global value chain.
Also present were Penang Secretary’s Office (Local Government Section) secretary Muhamad Husni Mahmud; Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) strategic planning and policy advocacy director Surayu Susah; and Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd corporate head Fang Qing Lin.
