Kiwanis club priorities mental health series

QUITE a number of young people nowadays suffer from mental illness. And Kiwanis Club Penang Central (KCPC) desires to do its part to help them.

Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy said KCPC would hold its new Mental Health Series for 2020 to focus on trainings and workshops in schools.

“I understand that for December 2019 there will be three talks on mental health and stress management,” Dr Ramasamy said in his speech at the KCPC Installation Dinner 2019 held at Hotel Equatorial on Nov 22.

He recalled that last April, Kiwanis Charter president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai first approached him to seek the state Education Department’s endorsement for a series of lectures and workshops to be conducted by the medical professionals, psychiatrists and psychologists from various hospitals in Penang and overseas.

That, he said, was the beginning of his adventure with KCPC.

Dr Ramasamy said KCPC has also conducted many other successful projects, including the recent Penang Hill Treasure Hunt 2019 where some 200 primary and secondary children took part and were also treated to lunch, goodies and prizes.

“Another current project is the gift of sight collaboration with Focus Point which provides spectacles for school children from the B40 families,” he commented.

He also commended Wong for spearheading a club within two years of its inception to become the largest in terms of membership in the northern region.

Also present were at the installation dinner were incoming KCPC president Datuk Dennis Chuah and Kiwanis Malaysia District Governor Dr Laurence Lim.

Chuah said the new team of KCPC would continue with three key projects, namely the Mental Health Series with the cooperation of the Penang Hospital, Kiwanis Educates Children For The Future and Young Entrepreneur Programme.

“Our Kiwanis is not just about the committee, we are a family of 52 members who serve together for the betterment of children and contribute in the spirit of servant leadership,” he added.
