THE establishment of the Kiwanis Sensory Room at Penang Hospital today marks a significant milestone in supporting children with special needs.

The facility, initiated by the Kiwanis Club of Penang Central in collaboration with Penang Hospital, aims to assist children with autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other cognitive challenges.

It provides specialised therapy to enhance their development and social adaptation.

In his speech, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the urgent need for specialised intervention, noting that more than 6,000 children visit the hospital’s Occupational Therapy Unit annually.

“Many of these children seek treatment for physical, mental, and cognitive development issues,” he said at the launch of the event at Penang Hospital.

The Kiwanis Sensory Room is designed to facilitate ‘sensory integration’ therapy, an approach that helps children manage sensory sensitivities and improve their social, emotional, and behavioural responses.

According to Chow, the facility is equipped with specialised tools and equipment that allow children to explore their senses in a learning environment.

Reiterating the state’s commitment to supporting children with special needs, Chow said the government would continue expanding educational programmes, therapy centres, and awareness campaigns.

“We will address the challenges faced by the parents of those special needs children,” he added, calling the initiative a crucial step in advancing child welfare in Penang.

The Kiwanis Sensory Room is now open, offering a safe and nurturing space for children who require specialised care.

Kiwanis Club Penang Central president Dr Ngoo Seong Boon noted the club’s dedication to supporting special needs children, commending the collaboration with Penang Hospital.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a well-structured environment,” he said.
