A TOTAL of 300 children from various schools in Penang including those with special needs were treated to a science adventure at Penang Tech Dome by the Kiwanis Club of Penang (Kiwanis PC) in conjunction with the ‘Global Kiwanis One Day’ celebration on Oct 27.
The schools and organisations which participated in the ‘Kiwanis One Day 2018’ programme included Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas Pulau Pinang, Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Padang Tembak, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Chiao Nan, Salvation Army Boys Home, Hui Yin Seh Buddhist Sunday School, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Sin Ya Alma Bukit Mertajam, School of Mentally Retarded Children, Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kong Min Cawangan Ke-2.
The expedition consisted of guided science activities for the kids with special needs and a science trail for the others and was wrapped up with a ‘Robot Show’.
Bagan Dalam assemblyman M. Satees, who represented the exco for Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Zairil Khir Johari, conveyed Zairil’s message at the event prior to the science tour.
“I am delighted to take note that Kiwanis PC has engaged in various charitable projects throughout the year focusing on children, youth as well as education.
“Today I would like to also commend Kiwanis PC on the launching of their ‘Kiwanis Educates Children for the Future’ motto together with their partners Penang Tech Dome, Penang Math Platform, McDonalds Farlim and Penang Chess Association.
“This programme is very meaningful for me as my late father Tan Sri Khir Johari who is also known as Bapa Kiwanis was a former Education Minister, and I myself is a spokesperson for the Penang STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics),” Satees said on behalf of Zairil.
At the event a mock cheque of RM15,000 was presented to the parents of Gabriel Lucas Khaw de Leon, a former St. Xavier’s primary school and Prince of Wales Island International School student who had obtained a partial scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai, the president of Kiwanis PC, stated that the tour was organised to encourage students to be inquisitive and to stir their interest in Science.
