THE backlane transformation project at the George Town World Heritage Site has received praises from many a resident, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He said they did not believe that the dark alleys and walkways could be transformed to their present clean image, giving the residents some form of security and peace in using them even at night.
“All this is not by chance but by design. For this, I must congratulate the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) for their efforts in upgrading and beautifying the sidelanes and backlanes,” Chow said in his speech when he officiated the newly upgraded sidelane and backlane from Lebuh Ah Quee to Lorong Pitt in George Town today.
“Although the expenditure is small, about RM280,000, the impact is big. I’m glad to hear the positive views of many of the residents.
“It’s not just about improving the landscape but also making the people feel safe to use the backlanes with the installation of CCTVs and streetlights.
“This is a good project to engage with the community and achieve a sustainable development goal.”
MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang, who was present, said MBPP has targeted to upgrade a total of 9km of backlanes and sidelanes since 2017. It is expected to be completed in the next two or three years.
“So far, we have upgraded a total of 1.7km and this year we will be upgrading another 1.3km. When the 9km upgrade is completed, we will have a total green space of about 10 acres.
“It’s not just for beautification but for a cycling, friendly city and a workable community.
“We’re also working towards a low-carbon city framework. What we want to see is transforming the place as well as engagement by the community.”
Also present were Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, MBPP secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali and MBPP councillors Wong Yuee Harng, Connie Tan, Alan Lim Wei Lun and Tan Soo Siang.
