SOME 1,000 traditional Chinese lanterns adorned Jalan Perak, infusing the neighbourhood with a vibrant Chinese New Year (CNY) festive atmosphere.
Jelutong MP RSN Rayer revealed that the lanterns were displayed along a 500-metre stretch of Jalan Perak, a major thoroughfare.
“Next year, we plan to extend the lantern display further, from the Jelutong Police Station to the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station,” Rayer announced during the lighting ceremony at Jalan Perak yesterday.
Rayer also shared that the lantern installation cost approximately RM75,000, which he funded in his capacity as the Jelutong MP.
Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng highlighted the widespread adoption of lantern displays across all Penang constituencies.
“This initiative showcases Penang as the best place to celebrate CNY, with red lanterns brightening the streets everywhere.
“With the upcoming ‘Visit Malaysia 2026’, Penang will be a great location to experience the various festive vibes,” Lim added.
Also present were Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong, former MBPP councillors Harvindar Singh and Choong You Ray, along with members from six Village Community Management Councils (MPKKs), Women and Family Development Committee (JWPK), and Penang Youth Committee (JBPP) also attended the event.
It is learned that this year marked the first time lanterns were installed along the main road, as they were previously displayed around the Perak Road Market vicinity.
