THE installation of traditional Chinese lanterns in the Pengkalan Kota constituency has brought vibrancy to the area, enhancing the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year (CNY).
Deputy Finance Minister and Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying said that the festive decorations will not only attract tourists but also serve as a symbol of a bright future.
“Weld Quay Road, a major thoroughfare frequented by tourists, should be lighted up to enhance the Chinese New Year festive mood.
“A total of 400 lanterns, costing RM8,000, were sponsored by a businessman who wishes to stay anonymous. We would like to thank him for his generous contribution.
“The installation cost for the lanterns, which is around RM29,000 was borne by the Tanjong parliamentary constituency’s office,” Lim said during the lighting-up ceremony at Bomba Sukarela Sri Tanjung, Weld Quay yesterday.
According to Lim, following the lighting-up ceremony at the Pengkalan Kota, the Padang Kota and the Komtar constituencies will also be illuminated with lanterns.
“We would like to thank the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), especially mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, for their assistance with the electricity supply for the lanterns.
“As the Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Tanjong, I remain dedicated to ensuring the welfare and development of our community as well as driving the economic growth of this constituency, with the support of both the state and Federal governments,” she added.
Also present were MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, and MBPP councillors Allan Lim, Nicholas Theng and Benji Ang.
Allan Lim emphasised that events like the lantern lighting ceremony showcase Penang’s unique cultural heritage and festive spirit.
“We need to appreciate the harmony and the close ties among various races in Malaysia, especially in Penang.
“Whether it is Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali or Christmas, the state elected representatives consistently organise programmes related to these festivities, fostering better understanding and unity among the diverse races and religions here,” he added.
