GONE but not forgotten is the perfect way to describe the sudden and unexpected demise of Azmi Hussin, a former popular cartoonist from Penang who raised his ranks in the arts industry with limitless and creative talent depicting the Penang life.

Azmi passed away at the age of 40 on March 5 in George Town.

Today, although not physically present with us, Azmi’s works continue to speak loud voices as a total of RM12,640 was raised through a special donation drive initiated by the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI).

The initiative, which started on March 9, was completed through the sale of Azmi’s books and art.

In a special handover ceremony today, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, representing the Penang government, presented the proceeds to Azmi’s wife, Marjanah Shammoon Rali.

“Azmi was an idol, mentor, and a good friend to many, and as a result of his contribution to the state and country in the area of arts, he became a popular figure here and beyond.

“His artworks spoke volumes of his love and compassion towards Penang, and he was always hungry to tell more ‘local’ stories, specifically highlighting the unique multicultural environment here.

“He was also heavily involved in crafting Penang’s rich heritage history in the most artistic form he could, especially during the annual George Town Festival series,” Chow said in his speech during the brief ceremony in Komtar today.

Chow also announced an additional RM2,000 contribution to the family from his Padang Kota state constituency allocation.

Meanwhile, Marjanah, grieving the loss of her husband, expressed her gratitude to the Penang govt and GTWHI for the donation drive that will prove to be helpful to accommodate the family’s daily and essential expenses.

Abdul Aleem, 38, Marjanah’s brother, broke down in tears while stating that Azmi has always been the backbone of the family.

“He was the one that kept all of us going, the driving force in the family.

“It has been more than 20 days now without him, and life has never been more difficult to deal with,” said Abdul Aleem.

Azmi leaves behind his wife Marjanah, and three children.

They are Muhamad Asnawi Mohd Azmi, 17, Muhamad Aswad Ariff Mohd Azmi, 15, and Nur Shahzanani Mohd Azmi, 11.

Also present earlier were GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee, and GTF director Jack Wong.
