Let’s Tik Tok the cultural legacy of Penang

Do you Tik Tok? If yes, then watch out for the ‘Youth For Future – Discover the Charm of Chinese Culture in Penang’ Tik Tok video contest organised by the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) with the support of the Chinese Consulate-General in Penang.

According to PYDC general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling, the contest would serve as a platform to encourage youth to use technology innovatively and showcase the beauty of Chinese cultural inheritance in Penang.

“The contest would be able to expose the youth to the world of digitalisation and encourage them to become young digital talents through the video-making process.

“Through this, we want to empower the youth in creative art creation and at the same time instil their interest in creative economy.

“Furthermore, the contest will also give youth an insight of the Chinese cultural inheritance in Penang. They may even be able to discover some of the unexplored cultures while participating,’’ said Gwee during a press conference today.

Gwee also said Tik Tok, which is one of the most trending social media platforms, could help to exhibit Penang’s uniqueness internationally.

“The videos will be able to generate economic value for the state. They will help promote our cultural heritage, which will then attract more people to Penang.

“Apart from that, we also want to boost the youth’s self-esteem and encourage them to be bold in expressing their talents,’’ added Gwee.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, who was also present, said the contest is in line with state government’s vision to empower the youth through art and innovation.

“We believe that this contest will inspire young people to be resilient in facing the challenges of the future.

“The contest is open to those who are aged between 15 and 35 and the participants must be born in Penang or individuals residing, working or studying in Penang.

“The video can be made in English or Chinese language, and it must have subtitles in English.

“The length of the video should be one minute, and the content must be based on the theme set by the committee of the contest.

“So, all young people out there, come and participate as you can sharpen both your hard and soft skills while having fun,’’ said Soon.

Only one entry from each individual or group will be accepted and the videos must be uploaded to the Tik Top App with the hashtag of #YouthForFuturePG and submitted to the Google Form provided.
