Also present were Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, who is also the Tanjong MP, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and MBPP councillor Benji Ang Ming Quan.

Lim shared that Light Street marks the third and final location under the Tanjong parliamentary constituency to be adorned with lanterns, following similar initiatives at Weld Quay and Anson Road.

“In total, over 1,000 lanterns have been installed across these three locations, at a cost of RM52,000, funded entirely by my office,” Lim said.

In his speech, Chow expressed gratitude for the initiative, emphasising the deep cultural significance of lanterns in the Chinese New Year tradition.

Chow expressed gratitude for the initiative, emphasising the deep cultural significance of lanterns in the Chinese New Year tradition.

“The red colour, long synonymous with Chinese New Year, symbolises prosperity and joy, while lanterns serve as an essential decoration, deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions.

“The lighting of over 1,000 lanterns across these locations not only beautifies George Town’s main streets but also stands as a testament to the harmony and unity that have flourished in Penang for generations,” Chow said.

He further highlighted the festival’s broader significance as a time to strengthen familial bonds, friendships, and community ties.

“In Penang, we are fortunate that the Chinese New Year celebration is not confined to the Chinese community alone. It is embraced by people from all backgrounds, transforming it into a unifying event that transcends ethnic and cultural boundaries,” Chow added.
