THE Lions Club of George Town (LCGT) has often been at the forefront when it comes to service for the community, and this time around, they have organised a virtual hiking event called ‘The Lions Virtual Climb for Green Penang Hill 2020’ to the Penang Hill Station 84 (P84) in Penang Hill.
The event, which is jointly organised by P84 committee members, began on Dec 12 and will end on Jan 31 next year.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the reason the event would last for more than a month is to allow participants to physically hike up to P84 at their own pace and time to avoid mass gathering.
“Participants must scan QR codes at designated locations to complete the various tasks lined up and to claim their rewards.
“The Lions Club aims to promote an active and healthy lifestyle of hiking and cycling among the people, as well as to promote a greener, cleaner and healthier environment for community engagement,” said Yeoh during a press conference at Big Ben Breakfast and Western Café in Jalan Kebun Bunga today.
The P84 rest area was initiated by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) while the P84 committee helped raise the funds for the project.
Due to a landslide that took place in 2013, a big part of the rest area was damaged. The P84 committee then raised funds to upgrade the rest area, which was opened to the public in 2019.
Now, Yeoh added that through the virtual hiking event funds would be raised to help maintain the facilities within the P84 rest area.
P84 committee chairman Datuk Jimmy Ong said the ongoing event is open to all Malaysians and that it targets at least 700 participants.
“Each participant is required to pay a registration fee of RM100, and it includes a dry fit T-shirt, finisher medal, e-certificate, e-coupon (RM50), free drink coupon and others.
“We (P84 committee) would like to thank the Lions Club for spearheading such an initiative that is truly beneficial to a large scale for the community,” Ong said during his speech.
Also present during the press conference were Penang Hill Corporation general manager Cheok Lay Leng and LCGT president Vincent Yen.
