A TOTAL of 140 students from five primary and secondary schools, along with members of the local community in the north Seberang Perai district, participated in a plogging event at Robina Eco Park in Teluk Ayer Tawar, Butterworth, this morning.

During the event, participants engaged in a beach clean-up at Pantai Robina, collecting an impressive 630kg of waste. This included a variety of materials such as food waste, polystyrene, paper, plastic, rags, metal, and glass. Remarkably, 548kg of the total waste collected was recyclable, highlighting the success of the initiative in reducing environmental pollution.

The plogging activity was part of the ‘Program Keceriaan Alam Sekitar @ Robina Park,’ organised by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP). The event aimed to foster environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices among the community.

In addition to the clean-up, the one-day programme featured an upcycling workshop, booths selling upcycled and recycled products, and exhibition booths from both state and federal agencies. These booths provided valuable information and resources on environmental protection, further promoting awareness on sustainable living.

MBSP mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid emphasised the importance of the programme’s goal to instil recycling habits and environmental responsibility in the younger generation and the local community.

Baderul emphasised the importance of the programme’s goal to instil recycling habits and environmental responsibility in the younger generation and the local community.

“Our objective is to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and the need to practice waste segregation at the source.

“It is crucial that we educate both the younger generation and the wider community on how they can contribute to protecting the environment,” Baderul stated during a press conference at the event.

He also mentioned that the programme was funded by a RM30,000 grant provided by the Local Government Development Ministry (KPKT), and based on the positive response, MBSP is committed to organising similar initiatives in the future.
