FROM the appearance and demeanour of a middle-aged man, one might not guess that Low Chee Pheng is an internationally renowned sculptor.

Born and bred in Penang, the 48-year-old Low is a self-taught sculptor with over 30 years of experience. His passion lies in creating public art.

Humble, soft-spoken, and down-to-earth, Low began his journey into sculpture during his teenage years.

In an interview with Buletin Mutiara recently, Low shared that he chose sculpture as a way to challenge himself and pursue his passion.

“Sculpting is not an easy task, especially when it involves carving from marble and stone. I do everything myself, without assistance.

“This process requires my grit, perseverance, and passion to see it through. I source marble or stone materials from Simpang Pulai in Perak, which costs me a few thousand ringgit.

“Due to the cost, I sell the sculptures based on the type and craftsmanship involved,” Low said.

Low, who hails from Air Putih, mentioned that he has been involved with various monumental and public art projects, through invitations from local authorities and relevant parties.

“For instance, I designed the ‘Coastal Runners’ sculpture along Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

“I have also contributed sculptures to the national parks in Singapore and Langkawi. The Singapore National Art Gallery invited me for this purpose.

“Besides that, I assisted the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) in designing an emblem for a heritage brand in Esplanade,” he said.

Low also thanked the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) for supporting his efforts.

“I am hoping to attend an international symposium in France next year, which will feature some of the world’s renowned sculptors,” he added, noting that only up to 10 participants will be shortlisted for the event.
