THE enchanting festival of Loy Krathong lit up Amari SPICE Penang with a vibrant celebration of Thai culture, tradition, and cuisine.
Organised in collaboration with the Royal Thai consulate-general, the event invited guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Loy Krathong – a centuries-old festival honouring the water goddess Phra Mae Khongkha and symbolising the release of past negativity and the welcoming of new blessings.
The evening began with a captivating performance by the traditional Nora Dance Troupe, transporting attendees into the heart of Thai culture with their expressive movements and rhythmic storytelling.
The festivities were further enriched by a live cooking demonstration led by Thai acting consul-general Suratchaya Palawongse, assisted by skilled chefs Prakmuan Mernpraphan and Thanakith Pramoot.
Together with Chef Khun Krittapas Daycharthongnoi from Amari Phuket, they showcased the intricate preparation of traditional Thai dishes, delighting the audience with their expertise and passion for authentic flavours.
The invited guests were then treated to an immersive culinary journey at the Thai Cuisine Station and buffet spread within the Amaya Food Gallery.
A wide array of traditional dishes was on offer, highlighting Thailand’s diverse flavours and culinary heritage. Standouts included Nuer Phad Bai Kaphao, a fragrant fried beef dish with spicy basil leaves, and Nuer Phek Tun, a slow-braised lamb stew cooked to tender perfection. Classic dishes such as som tam (papaya salad) and the aromatic Keng Kai (red curry chicken with finger root) showcased the balance of sweet, spicy, sour, and savoury that defines Thai cuisine.
On behalf of Amari SPICE Penang, Amari Spice Penang executive assistant manager Christine Rock welcomed the invited guests to the special celebration.
“This festival, celebrated under the light of the full moon, carries a profound significance – it is a time to honour the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha, to reflect, let go of negativity, and welcome new blessings into our lives.
“The act of floating a krathong is symbolic of renewal, gratitude, and hope, and it is a privilege to share this tradition with all of you here tonight.
“I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the Royal Thai consulate-general and to our distinguished guest, Thai acting consul-general Suratchaya Palawongse, for their presence and for enriching our celebration with their support and cultural insight.
“Most importantly, thank you to each of you, our honoured guests, for joining us tonight.
“Your presence makes this celebration truly special, as together we honour tradition, savour the tastes of Thailand, and embrace the beauty and meaning of Loy Krathong.
“We hope you enjoy the evening, the rich flavours, the cultural performances, and, most of all, the spirit of togetherness that this festival embodies. Thank you and enjoy the celebration,” she said during the event yesterday evening (Nov 16).
Suratchaya said she was honoured to be present and celebrate the beautiful and meaningful festival of Loy Krathong.
“This occasion holds a special place in Thai culture, symbolising renewal, and reflection, as we welcome fresh blessings and new beginnings.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Amari SPICE Penang for their kind support and dedication in bringing this celebration to life.
“Your commitment to showcasing Thai culture and cuisine with such authenticity and warmth is truly commendable, and we are grateful for your partnership,” she said.
The evening culminated in a dinner experience that invited guests to savour every bite of traditional and innovative Thai creations.
The month-long ‘Loy Krathong Celebration & Amazing Thai Cuisine’, running from Nov 16 to Dec 14, 2024, allows visitors to explore even more flavours, with highlights including signature crab curry from Amari Phuket and a variety of Thai desserts like mango sticky rice and Khanom Babin, a delightful coconut pancake.
