Lucky draw an incentive for assessment taxpayers

FIFTY assessment taxpayers were today rewarded with lucky draw prizes, ranging from cash vouchers to the top prize of a Samsung Galaxy S9 handphone.

Speaking at the lucky draw event held at Komtar this morning, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Addnan Mohd Razali said they were rewarded for their settling their assessment for the whole of this year and did not have any arrears.

“The payment of assessment tax is the responsibility of each premises owner.

“Assessment tax is the main income of a local council, and through this income, it can carry out various projects for the well-being of Penangites,” he added.

For this year, a total of 58,386 account holders were eligible for the lucky draw compared to 28,471 last year.

“MBPP hopes the lucky draw will be held again to encourage taxpayers to settle their assessment tax on time,” Addnan commented.

“The council will, however, take more stringent measures against premises owners who have outstanding dues.”

Retiree Melvin Low, 47, said he was surprised to win the second prize of a Panasonic 43” HD TV.

“I had been paying the half-year assessment before this. When being informed that I could qualify for a lucky draw if I paid the full year amount, I immediately agreed to do so,” he added.

Low, who lives in Batu Ferringhi, thanked MBPP for the initiative and said he would continue to pay the full year assessment from next year.
