WITH Chinese New Year just around the corner, along with the Thaipusam and Chap Goh Meh celebrations and the highly anticipated school holidays, the opening of Lyf George Town Penang is perfectly timed, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow highlighted that hotel occupancy rates in the state are expected to exceed 90% in the coming months.

“Last month, Penang experienced a surge in hotel occupancy rates as tourists from East Asia, the United States, and Europe sought to escape the winter for a warmer, more summery Christmas and New Year.

“In the weeks ahead, we anticipate an increase in domestic tourism.

“Many visitors from other states will return to Penang to celebrate Chinese New Year, while others will seize the opportunity to visit Penang during the holiday season.

“Furthermore, let us not forget that Malaysia is chairing ASEAN this year.

“Penang will host several high-level meetings, and our hotels will play a pivotal role in accommodating foreign dignitaries and their delegations.

“As such, we warmly welcome more hospitality players like Ascott Limited to expand their services in Penang to meet the ever-growing demand in this sector,” Chow said during the official opening ceremony of Lyf George Town Penang today.

He also expressed his delight that Lyf was established in a prime location at the heart of George Town, where history and modernity blend seamlessly.

“As a Unesco World Heritage Site, George Town stands as a testament to our dedication to preserving cultural and historical treasures.

“Our streets tell stories of a rich and diverse heritage, shaped by communities that have flourished here for centuries.

“From iconic shophouses to vibrant street art, Penang offers an experience that is both timeless and dynamic.

“At the same time, Penang is a progressive, forward-looking state.

“Aligned with the Penang2030 vision, we have transformed into a hub for business, tourism, and creativity, drawing visitors from across the globe who seek not only leisure but also meaningful connections and authentic experiences.

“I am particularly pleased to see the hospitality industry collaborating closely with local communities to celebrate Penang’s heritage.

“By partnering with artisans, vendors, and creatives, visitors can gain a deeper appreciation of what makes Penang truly special,” Chow added.

On another note, in response to a reporter’s question about the state government’s plans to attract more investors to refurbish heritage buildings, Chow reiterated the importance of preserving dilapidated structures.

“This remains a challenge we face today.

If we do not take action to save these buildings, they will eventually collapse, losing their historical significance.

“However, since George Town attained Unesco World Heritage Site status in 2008, building owners have become more sentimental and appreciative of their properties.

“Over the years, we have witnessed extensive refurbishment and restoration efforts across numerous heritage buildings.

This is clear evidence of the commitment to preserving our historical assets,” Chow said.

He cited Lyf George Town Penang as an excellent example, noting that the establishment was initiated in a long-abandoned garage building.

Also present at the ceremony was Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
