The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is running its first ever advertising campaign to build a pede s t r i a n -friendly city.
MBPP’s “Pedestrian Is King” campaign will be held on Nov 23 from 9.30am to 11am at City Hall, Jalan Padang Kota Lama in George
Town.It will be officiated by exco for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation,Chow Kon Yeow.
MBPP’s Infrastructure andTraffic Management committee alternate chairman Muhammad Bakthiar Wan Chik said this at a press conference in Komtar on Nov 13. Also present were councillors Connie Tan, Joseph Ng and Chris Lee.
Bakthiar said recently George Town was named by Lonely Planet as the 4th Best Charismatic City to visit.“Therefore, this is the best time to launch ‘Pedestrian is King’ campaign,” he added. “We hope to build a ‘walkers paradise’ to make walking useful, safe and enjoyable,” he said. Bakthiar said the long term vision of this campaign will take at least three years to achieve.
“For now, the first phase of the campaign (educating motorists) will last for three months to encourage motoriststo stop at zebra crossings when pedestrians are present,” he said.
The council’s Infrastructure and Traffic Committee will lead this campaign with a Penang-based communicationconsulting firm to manage it.}
