Making Penang liveable

THE Penang government remains dedicated to fostering a liveable environment for its residents, state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu (PH-Perai) said.

Sundarajoo highlighted the state’s longstanding commitment to addressing affordable housing issues dating back to 2008.

“From 2008 until November this year, a total of RM350.9 million has been allocated for the maintenance works involving 36,172 housing schemes.

“We have also allocated RM243,113,635 for 25,346 projects through the Public Housing Maintenance Fund, and RM69,648,517 for 742 projects under the Penang Maximum 80% Housing Maintenance Fund.

“Besides that, the housing scheme under the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has received RM32,033,277 for 9,738 projects while housing projects under the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) received RM6,163,183,” said Sundarajoo, a first-term assemblyman when winding up his speech during the State Legislative Assembly session.

On the issue of certain quarters renting units to foreign workers or third parties, Sundarajoo said the state was considering imposing restrictions.

“A task force involving the local authorities, namely the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MBSP), is being formed to look into the matter,” he said.
