MALAYSIA has lost one of its most distinguished marine scientists, Prof Datuk Dr Zulfigar Yasin, who dedicated more than three decades to marine research, education, and conservation.

He was 65.

His passing yesterday night (Feb 3), at Sunway Medical Centre in Seberang Jaya, has left a profound void in the scientific community, with colleagues and students mourning the loss of a mentor, leader, and friend.

Born in Air Itam, Prof Zulfigar began his journey at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 1988, where he became a cornerstone of marine science research.

He was deeply involved in pioneering studies on marine biodiversity, coral reefs, and coastal ecosystems, and his contributions were instrumental in advancing Malaysia’s oceanographic research.

A Mentor, a Father Figure, and a Legend

Those who knew Prof Zulfigar remember him not only for his scientific excellence but also for his kindness and guidance.

USM’s Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) director Prof Datuk Dr Aileen Tan Shau Hwai, one of his closest protégés, expressed her grief.

“I have lost a very dear person, who had groomed me to who I am today. Prof Zul was not only my mentor, but like a father, a brother, and a very dear buddy. He is a legend and cannot be replaced,” she said.

Dr Khalil Munawar echoed these sentiments, saying: “My heart is filled with sorrow upon hearing this news.”

“I do not even know what to say. Prof Zul has done so much for us, more than I could ever repay. Only Allah can reward all the kindness and contributions he has given.

“He was not only a mentor and professor to me and my friends but a father figure to us.

“Thank you, Prof, for everything,” he said.

Meanwhile, USM senior deputy registrar Mohamad Abdullah, who had long admired Prof Zulfigar’s dedication, shared his shock at the news.

“I was shocked this morning to see the message about the passing of this esteemed marine science expert.

“It feels like just yesterday we were exchanging messages. He was very humble and incredibly committed to his expertise.

“During his career at USM, he was one of the academics I deeply respected and remembered, especially as an expert in marine science, corals, and marine biodiversity.

“After his retirement, he remained an influential scientist and a friendly figure in the media, closely associated with the CEMACS at Muka Head, Teluk Bahang, Penang.

“I will always remember his warmth, humility, and hard work, as well as his contributions to scientific research at USM.

“May his soul be blessed, and my condolences to those he left behind,” Mohamad said.

CEMACS senior lecturer Dr Annette Jaya Ram remembered Prof Zulfigar as a remarkable soul who brought light to everyone he encountered.

“He was not just a lecturer or a conventional marine scientist – Prof had a deep appreciation for the arts, whether in music or photography.

“His kindness, generosity, and sharp wit are what I will remember most about him.

“He taught me lessons that went far beyond textbooks, sharing stories that were both captivating and transformative. Every encounter with him left people changed for the better.

“I will forever miss him and cherish the wonderful memories we shared – whether at work, during our travels, or simply exploring new places in search of good food,” she said.

A Trailblazer in Marine Research

Prof Zulfigar’s career was marked by remarkable achievements. He played a key role in the establishment of USM’s CEMACS, which became a leading hub for marine research.

In 2002, he led a Malaysian research team on a 73-day expedition to Antarctica, working alongside the Australian Antarctic Division to study extreme marine environments.

Two years later, he initiated ROSES (Research on the Seas and Islands of Malaysia), the largest scientific expedition in Malaysian waters at the time.

He also contributed to the successful breeding of the ‘Tiram Siraj’ oyster, a high-quality oyster developed through research with Prof Datuk Dr Aileen Tan. This initiative was later recognised by the USM chancellor, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail.

Beyond academia, Prof Zulfigar was passionate about sharing knowledge with the public. He authored several coffee table books, including ‘Inspirations’ (on CEMACS), ‘@USM.MY’ (on USM), and ‘Semporna’ (on the Bajau Laut community).

A Legacy That Lives On

Prof Zulfigar’s contributions extended beyond research and publications – he was a mentor, a leader, and an advocate for marine conservation. His impact will continue to inspire future generations of marine scientists.

As Malaysia bids farewell to this extraordinary scholar, the legacy he leaves behind will remain a beacon for the country’s marine science community.

Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends, and students. May his soul rest in peace.
