MATTA Fair helps boost tourism

THE Malaysian Associations of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair 2024, the most-awaited event for travellers has kicked off in Penang at the Setia SPICE Arena today.

 

The two-day event (April 27 & 28), features more than 300 booths showcasing diverse offerings in the tourism sector, including travel agencies offering tour packages, hotels, resorts, and many others.

 

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was the chief guest at the event, said that MATTA has played a pivotal role in promoting Malaysia, particularly Penang, as a premier tourism destination.

“The influx of tourists is integral to our economy, providing employment opportunities, and business ventures, and enhancing our overall economic growth,” Chow added.

 

He shared that, currently, Penang has direct flights from 15 international cities, including Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Banda Acheh, Ho Chi Minh City, Doha, Haikou, and Shanghai (is set to commence in May).

 

“Penang’s status as the aviation hub for the northern region is further enhanced with the recent announcement of the Penang International Airport expansion, promising even more direct flights,” he said.

 

Chow mentioned that in addition, Penang’s tourism industry has made significant strides in recovery over the past two years, especially with the reopening of borders.

 

“It is important to remember the vital role of domestic tourism in bolstering the industry.

 

“Here at MATTA Fair, we see exhibitions showcasing domestic destinations and Muslim-friendly packages, highlighting the diversity of our offerings,” Chow said, while also mentioning that cruise tourism in Penang is receiving attention.

 

He announced the maiden voyage of two prestigious cruise liners, Costa Deliziosa and Serenade of the Seas, to Penang.

 

He also praised state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai for working closely with various stakeholders to further boost the industry.

 

Meanwhile, MATTA Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong said 40,000 visitors are expected to attend the event generating a target of RM35 million worth of sales.

“We would like to thank the state government for initiating many direct flights to the state,” Leong added.
