THE term of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor is set to expire in June, but discussions regarding a possible extension have already begun, according to the Chief Minister.

Responding to the media, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the state executive council (MMK) has started reviewing the matter.

However, any extension of the mayor’s tenure will require approval from the Public Service Department (JPA), in line with standard procedures.

“This is a routine process. If there is to be an extension, it requires approval from JPA, and the process can sometimes take three to four months.

“We must follow the procedure,” Chow said.

The Chief Minister added that the state government is carefully evaluating the situation and intends to propose an extension, subject to the necessary approval.

“If approval is granted, then the term can be extended,” Chow explained.
