TWO exemplary employees of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) have been lauded for their integrity and dedication to the community, after going above and beyond their duties to return a lost pouch to its rightful owner.

The incident occurred yesterday morning (Oct 4) around 10.30am when a local driver, who had unknowingly dropped her pouch from her car, was in for a surprise she will never forget.

Before leaving the Halaman Mayang area in Bayan Baru, she did not realise that her pouch had fallen onto the street as she closed the car door and drove away.

“I only realised what had happened when I reached a traffic light.

“My heart skipped a beat, and I immediately made a U-turn. But with three red lights on the way back, it felt like the longest drive of my life!” Sweezy Tan recounted.

Her anxiety only grew as she returned to the location, 10 to 15 minutes later, only to find no sign of her bag.

Inside were not only important documents and bank cards but also RM200 in cash. She feared the worst, assuming it had been lost or taken.

However, to her surprise, two MBPP cleaners on a motorcycle were waiting nearby. Spotting the driver, they approached and asked if she had lost something.

To her immense relief, they handed her the missing pouch – everything inside was intact.

The pouch was returned to Tan.

Tan expressed her profound gratitude to the two men, identified as Osman Ibrahim and Jailany Kuthubutheen.

“I can not express how relieved I felt. It was a moment of pure gratitude,” she said.

MBPP has since been praised for employing such dedicated and honest individuals. This heartwarming incident serves as a testament to the values of public service and community spirit that MBPP strives to uphold.

For their part, Osman and Jailany were simply happy to have been able to help, embodying the integrity and reliability that Penang’s city council workers are known for.
