THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has consistently been carrying out inspection and maintenance works on trees.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said that the council had conducted maintenance on 37,000 trees last year.

“So far, MBPP has maintained about 3,000 trees this year.

“The effort is in line with the council’s Smart Environment Plan. It is important to increase our effort to prevent any untoward incident.

“We thank the MBPP workers for working tirelessly to clean up the roads, following the storm which occurred yesterday,” he told reporters during the visit to one of the storm sites at Jalan Zainal Abidin today.

Strong wind and rain lashed the state yesterday. Trees were uprooted and roofs of several food stalls were ripped.

Jagdeep praised the council workers for putting in their efforts to serve the community.

He pointed out that the wind, which was recorded yesterday, was travelling at 68km per hour.

MBPP secretary A. Rajendran, who was present, said the council had managed to clear the fallen trees.
