THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) recently conducted a special operation targeting business premises obstructing sidewalks by placing their items in public spaces.
The operation, carried out by the city council’s Enforcement and Licensing Department, took place along Chulia Street and Love Lane on Aug 13.
In a statement, MBPP reported that stern action was taken against nine business premises during the operation.
“Starting at 8.30pm, MBPP seized 44 items from the nine business premises, including 29 chairs, 10 tables and five advertising signs.
“The city council acted decisively in response to these businesses’ repeated disregard for warnings and fines issued before.
“The confiscation was carried out under Section 46 (1) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974(obstruction).
“All items seized during the operations have been stored at the MBPP Enforcement Department’s storage room for documentation purposes and further action,” the statement said.
MBPP also advised all business operators to stick to the guidelines and regulations by avoiding placing any items that can obstruct sidewalks as it can cause inconvenience for the public.
