CREATING MakerSpace is important to encourage the younger generation to venture into STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Art & Mathematics), says state Human Capital Development, Science and Technology committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.
Jagdeep who is also the Deputy Chief Minister II, said this when he visited the MakerSpace at Taman Harapan in Jalan S.P Chelliah, which is currently under construction. He was accompanied by the Penang Island City Council’s (MBPP) team today.
The Taman Harapan MakerSpace (MBPP Makers Space@Taman Harapan) is an initiative by the council following the establishment of Makerspace Lab in Balik Pulau (MBPP MakerSpace@Balik Pulau).
“I would like to congratulate the MBPP for establishing the second MakerSpace here at the SP Chelliah in George Town after setting up the first one in Balik Pulau.
“The setting up of the MBPP Makers Space@Taman Harapan is set to be completed soon and we hope that this facility will play an important role in instilling an interest in STEAM among the young ones,” Jagdeep said during his visit to MBPP Makers Space@Taman Harapan.
Jagdeep shared that the MBPP MakerSpace@Balik Pulau has benefited more than 10,000 students in Balik Pulau from 2019 to 2023.
“To date, there are 129 maker labs in the respective schools (primary and secondary) in Penang.
“In Penang, there is no shortage of interest in STEAM subjects among the students, and we will keep moving forward in attracting more individuals to take up these subjects,” he added.
MBPP Town Planning director Mohd Bashir Sulaiman thanked Jagdeep for his continuous support of their initiative to establish the MakerSpace and hoped that more of such facilities would be set up.
