THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has approved the proposal to licence selected recreational activities at the Karpal Singh Drive promenade.

Councillor Nicholas Theng said the council agreed to licence five current operators and no transfer of ownership is allowed.

“The operating area is the promenade between the back of the Hean Choi Temple and the small pier near MacDonald’s in Sungai Pinang. The approximate distance is 400m.

“Only ninebot, foldable scooter and kiddie rides are allowed.

“Each operator will be charged a site rental fee of RM45 per month and an activity licence charge of RM10 per rental tool. The operators must comply with the conditions set by the local council from time to time,” he said during the MBPP ordinary meeting at City Hall today.

Theng said each operator must take up a public liability insurance worth RM100,000 which also covers the local council.

“They are also required to pay a licence fee deposit of RM2,000 to MBPP as security collateral to ensure that licencing conditions and regulations are always complied with,” he added.
