THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has intensified its efforts to control and prevent rat infestations at the Taman Tun Sardon Market, located in the Seri Delima constituency, through a dedicated campaign.
The initiative reflects the council’s proactive measures to reduce rat infestation at the market.
MBPP councillor Tan Soo Siang said that MBPP is committed to monitoring rat populations in public places, especially markets.
“We have taken several preventive measures to destroy the rats’ breeding places. On top of that, we carry out preventive efforts approximately every six months.
“We are also educating the market traders on the importance of maintaining hygiene to prevent rat infestations.
“Since 2019 till July 10 this year, a total of 89,583 rats have been eradicated by the local authorities,” she said.
Tan thanked the Local Government Ministry for the allocation given to this campaign and hopes that it will become an annual effort.
Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan expressed her gratitude to the council and the ministry for their commitment to addressing the rat issue.
“I appreciate the innovative approach and the initiative being piloted. As an assemblyman for the area, I fully support this project and I am optimistic that it will help ensure our market remains pest-free,” she said.
She said MBPP has installed a Rat Cycle Trapper (RCT) to control the rat population and expressed her appreciation for the council’s effort.
