AS a move to provide more employment opportunities to all Penangites, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has recently appointed a total of 182 individuals as civil assistants.

MBPP councillor R. Kaliyappan said the newly-appointed staff members would be assisting mainly the Urban Services Department.

“They will be also helping other departments, such as MBPP’s Health Department, Engineering Department, and Management Services Department.

“We feel that their services will be helpful to all these departments and at the same time, the council also wants to give job opportunities to the locals instead of the foreign workers as we care for them.

“Out of the 182 people hired, 153 will be absorbed into the Urban Services Department, 15 into the Engineering Department, 13 into the Health Department and one into the Management Services Department,” said Kaliyappan at a press conference today.

Kaliyappan urged the job seekers to keep checking MBPP’s social media platforms for the announcement of new job openings this month’s end.

He added that out of the 153 people who will be joining the Urban Services Department, 65 of them were earlier appointed as part-timers.

Meanwhile, Kaliyappan said there will be another round of job openings at MBPP for the civil assistant position at the end of March.

“To all the job seekers, this is a good chance to land yourself a job. So, keep checking our social media platforms for the announcement of new job openings this month’s end.

“For the last round, we received a total of 4,000 applications and out of that, a total of 410 individuals were selected to attend the interview.”

It is learned that the civil assistants (H11) will be offered a salary package of RM1,963 and this includes the allowances.

Kaliyappan also urged the Public Service Department (JPA) to raise the minimum salary of civil servants to RM1,500.

Apart from that, he said that MBPP’s new policy will help those who did not perform well in their studies to secure a job for the civil assistant position.

“Formerly, the minimum requirement to apply for the job was one credit and four passes in SPM. Now, they can even apply by just having a UPSR cert as the qualification,” he added.

Also present were Management Services Department director Azman Sirun and Urban Services Department director Danny Koay.
