IN preparation for the long school holidays and major festivities such as Chinese New Year and Thaipusam, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), through its Enforcement Department, has initiated ‘Ops Cuti Sekolah’.

The operation focuses on enforcement actions and traffic control in key religious and tourist hotspots to ensure smooth traffic flow during this busy period.

MBPP has outlined several measures to minimise traffic congestion, namely ‘Ops Payung’ at key locations.

Traffic enforcement here will focus on the following hotspots, Jalan Penang (three checkpoints) – Chowrasta Market, Jeruk Madu Shop, and in front of Lebuh Keng Kwee, where operations will be from 11am to 5pm, starting Jan 18 until Feb 16.

Secondly, at Penang Hill, where two checkpoints will manage traffic from 12pm to 6pm, running from Jan 25 to Feb 16, followed by Air Itam as well.

As for road closures, the entry from Lebuh Light to Jalan Padang Kota Lama (near Town Hall) will be closed from 6pm daily between Jan 18 and Feb 16, to facilitate smoother traffic flow for vehicles exiting Padang Kota.

Towing trucks will start its patrolling at 6pm to remove obstructive vehicles.

During a media conference this morning at Chowrasta Market, MBPP councillors said additional measures will be lined-up to address further traffic congestion.

Construction and road excavation works on major routes will be suspended during the school holidays, except for emergency repairs.

A 24-hour maintenance team will be on standby to handle any unforeseen issues.

MBPP, alongside the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Road Transport Department (JPJ), will patrol high-traffic areas such as Gurney Drive, Pulau Tikus, Komtar, and Queensbay Mall.

Visitors are urged to park in designated areas to avoid traffic disruptions and ensure smoother commutes for others.

Road users are also reminded to comply with traffic rules and follow instructions from MBPP and PDRM personnel.

Strict enforcement measures will be taken against violators to minimise congestion.

By implementing these strategic plans, MBPP aims to provide a pleasant and hassle-free experience for Penang residents and visitors during the holiday season.
