THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is offering some 700 registered night market traders to carry out their businesses in markets, hawker centres, and temporary hawker sites under its jurisdiction for six months’ free rental.

MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said he understood the plight of the night market traders, who have been unable to operate their business since the movement control order (MCO3.0) started on June 1.

“We have received 143 applications from the night market traders since the registration was opened yesterday.

“Through this initiative, we hope that the traders can reduce their burden in view of the ongoing lockdown period.

“They can apply to operate their businesses at the 601 vacant MBPP stalls in accordance with strict standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he told reporters via online after the full council meeting today.

Yew charing the council meeting accompanied by MBPP secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali.

Yew added that the council had also agreed to exempt the monthly permit fee for 39 night market organisers who are registered under the MBPP.

“We are ready to assist any traders keen on conducting their business through online platform.

“We will do what we can to help them, including those who want to operate their business from home as well,” he said.

Interested traders can visit https://jbo.mbpp.gov.my for registration.
