MBPP lodges report on Teluk Bahang’s quarry activity

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has lodged a police report over an illegal granite quarry activity in Teluk Bahang.

Its mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the report was lodged last month while police were now investigating the incident which led to environmental destruction.

He said police have requested for ‘some time’ for their investigation to be carried out before action be taken.

“I was informed by the investigators that investigation would take a week or two.

“They are currently investigating,” he said at a press conference after attending the assessment rate briefing session at the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce (PCCC) in Light Street today.

Also present were state Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, PCCC president Datuk Seri Hong Yeam Wah and vice-president Datuk Finn Choong.

Yew was asked by reporters over a front-page article in an English daily today, which reported that the illegal quarry has been operating in Teluk Bahang for several years despite it was made known in 2016.

Yew added a stop-work order has been issued to the operator in February this year on the hill clearing.

However, the daily reported that the operator has continued carrying out the quarry works.
