THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is continuously inspecting and monitoring trees that pose a risk of falling to prevent any mishap.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Batu Gantong today, MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran affirmed the local authorities’ commitment to identifying such hazardous trees.
“We assure the public that we will take necessary action by removing trees deemed a risk to public safety.
“The people’s safety is our top priority, and we will collaborate with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM),” he said.
Rajendran noted that about 30 trees have already been removed Jalan Macalister, Jalan Utama, Jalan Kelawai and Jalan Burma.
Rajendran was asked by a reporter after a tree, believed to be 18m tall, fell on Burmah Road. A motorcyclist and a pillion rider sustained minor injuries in the 11.20pm incident last night (Sept 7).
He said that he immediately rushed to the scene to oversee the situation following the incident.
