TO address worsening traffic congestion on the island, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will implement a ‘no waiting zone’ along parts of Jalan Jelutong, Jalan Burma, Jalan Macalister, Pengkalan Weld, and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.

MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran announced the move during a press conference at the City Hall following the council’s regular meeting. He stated that the enforcement will apply to both sides of these roads.

Rajendran explained that the decision follows an internal study conducted by the council over the past few months, which found that the behaviour of certain motorists has been a major contributor to massive traffic jams.

“We have given numerous warnings and advice to the public, and we will continue to do so until April. However, starting May 1, we may take action against those who do not follow the rules.

“Officers will be on duty during peak hours, and patrolling will also be carried out at other times.

“Compared to before, we are now experiencing significant traffic jams, especially on weekends and public holidays, where a single car parked in an obstructive manner can cause gridlock across the city.

“We hope for cooperation from the public. We do not want to take such stern action, but the situation has reached a point where it is necessary,” Rajendran said.

It is learned that offenders could face fines of up to RM300, towing charges of RM100, and a clamping fee of RM50.
